Granite Hole Drilling Part 6
In the last episode of this series we will look at the drilling of the holes on the back face of the gantry. The will be used to form the complete assembly which we will look at later in this build blog.
Nothing special to report really, but it may give you some ideas for clamping in different situations so I thought it better to show, rather than leave out completely.
Again I made a jig for marking out these holes but I must not have taken a picture of this. You can get the idea. Score the holes by a millimetre or two, and then complete the bore afterwards.
Once again, I managed a nice clean finish to these inserts. It gets easier as you go along and find a technique that works for you. I suppose if you want to practice you could drill a hole in either spare granite or some wood, to test out the cure time and technique. If you cement in with the Fischer Resin/Mortar Hybrid mix that i used, if you are working at almost freezing temperatures, the curing time increases to almost 5 mins i believe. I believe that is you can stand for hours and hours in freezing temperatures pulling on the spindle of a pillar drill, you are rewarded with longer cure times.
Below I will just post a few photos of the gantry assembly with all the holes cut and rails attached. There are a few more holes to work on yet, but only a small number for things like ballscrew mounts and glass scale.
