Odlings Visit

Firstly, I want to pay thanks to Mason Nettles for putting the idea in my head for sourcing my granite from a headstone manufacturer. I had already considered a funeral parlour, but the prices were as you would expect extortionate. Going direct to the manufacture was a blessing in moving this project forward. Cheers Mason.

Granite Visit Day

So today saw a visit to a Headstone Manufacturer in Hull, UK. The company in question is Odlings. www.odlings.co.uk The gentleman I dealt with was called Lee Hall. He was incredibly helpful and an absolute pleasure to work with and visit. Lee also provided the correct PPE and stopped all mechanical equipment use so that my then 8 year old daughter could attend safely.

Estimated to be £1million of stock on site here.

The Yard in Hull

The Odlings yard in Hull is really quite huge and impressive. It is actually quite intimidating at the thought of the weight of the stock that is sat on the floor there. Lee informed me on the date of the visit that there was approxiamtely one million pounds worth of stock on site. To be honest, I was like a kid in a sweet shop. Immediately my mind filled with visions of all sorts of future builds based on granite.

This is a picture of the stone saw they had on site. I am tickling the old grey matter here, but i seem to remember Lee saying that there was about 90 people who worked on site, and about 60 of those were the artists who carved the headstones. It was a very impressive setup.

The granite that I chose was an Indian Black Granite with a Medium/Hign Density. I can't remember the exact density value. If i speak to Lee again, i will ask and update the post. It was a granite mined in India though. These pieces were about 1.5 x 4 metres long.

This is a smaller cutting table for the same granite saw. You can see the table bed is a huge piece og granite aswell.

Artistry

During the visit we got a full tour of the site and the workshops, but also the showroom. Here we took some photos of various pieces of artwork that the craftsmen have done on granite. It is difficult to see but they are not just painted on, but 3Dimensional carves and painting. Everything you can see in these photos has been made from solid granite.

I have intentionally not discussed the prices that I paid for the granite pieces that i ordered. I negotiated the conditions of the specification accuracy and delivery terms with Odlings and if you are so interested, Lee Hall will be more than glad to help you. I have left the contact details below...
